Area History

"When a man moves away from nature his heart becomes hard."

(Lakota Indian proverb)

Rooted in Tradition

Eight hundred years ago the Yancey County area was a thoroughfare and hunting ground for the ancient Indians, who also tended cornfields on the banks of the Cane River. In the mid-1700s, Scottish, English and Irish farmers settled the mountains and fertile river valleys. The settlers’ original cabins and the Indian villages have long since vanished, but their mingled traditions thrive in this area's rich mountain montage.

Mountain Heritage Estates is located on the northeast slope of Slickrock Mountain, just west of  Burnsville, NC and about 35 miles from Asheville.  For eons, water and wind have carved the ridges, hills and valleys that comprise Mountain Heritage Estates.
